Garam means 'heat'. So, literally, this masala has been heating our body and warming our hearts for hundreds of years. Garam masala has evolved very little since we first started making them! That in itself says so much about the importance given to culinary traditions that have originated from the kitchens of Indian and Mughal rulers.
